Roxanna Glass
Memorial Scholarship for the Arts
The Roxanna Glass Memorial
Scholarship Fund was established in the fall of 1995 by the friends
and family of Roxanna Glass, valedictorian of the 1987 graduating
class of Lewis County High School and a West Virginia Scholar.
Roxanna graduated in music from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania,
then pursued her doctorate in music theory from City University of
New York (CUNY). At the time of her death, Roxanna was completing
the last semester of her course work on her doctorate and was
teaching music at Baruch College in NYC. Roxanna was a composer,
winning national honors as a young child and writing many pieces
while in junior high and high school, as well as in college.
This scholarship is designed to
encourage and enable students from Lewis County to pursue higher
education in the fine arts.
Selection Criteria
The Roxanna Glass Memorial Scholarship Trust will offer a
scholarship this year to a student graduating from Lewis County High
School who will be attending a four-year college or university with
the intention of studying music or the fine arts. A selection
committee, appointed by the trustees, will select the scholarship
recipient. Each member of the selection committee will have an equal
vote. The committee will select the scholarship recipient from
applicants, basing their decision on the following factors:
A. Cumulative grade
point average
B. Recommendations
from teachers and others
C. Two essays
submitted by the student on:
1. Their academic and/or
professional goals and how the college/university experience
will help them achieve these goals
2. Formative background in music or the fine arts and how
these have helped shape their academic and/or professional
goals
D. Example(s) of work
(CD or audio tape of music, CD or DVD of art works, writing samples, DVD of drama or dance, etc.)
E. Extracurricular
activities and community involvement
The scholarship fund will not
discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, national origin
or other similar characteristics.
